Background

I took the Dale Carnegie course in 1986 and after completing it, I became a coach. My boss was a trainer, and when I saw that male employees were selected to take the course every year, I decided to challenge myself and take part as well. I was lucky to be able to experience the program in my mid-30s, and when I look back on my career afterwards, I can say that it was a great opportunity to learn how to think and work in a new way. I think it was a turning point for a more positive change in my behaviour.

Challenges and Results

Learning how to step out of my comfort zone left a particularly strong impression on me. Until then, I was not very good at public speaking. I thought it was wrong to speak loudly and express my feelings, but this course helped me break out of my shell, and I developed courage, confidence, and freedom of expression. I have since come to believe that there is nothing to be afraid of if I prepare properly, and I have come to enjoy giving talks at work as well on topics such as "presenting more clearly," "speaking with impact," and "creating a captivating environment.” I think it is important to think about what you want the other person to become. I learned the importance of not putting oneself, but the other person first.

Solution

To work in an organization, it is important to assert one's own ideas, but good results cannot be obtained without cooperation. To achieve this, it is important to influence people in a pleasant manner. Through Dale Carnegie, I learned the human relationship principles that make this possible. When something is not going well, we can find the solution by looking back at what was missing in accordance with the principle of influencing people. When I put myself in the other person's shoes, I can see my own lack of consideration. I am still a work in progress, but my awareness of my shortcomings will lead me to the next stage of growth.

Message

In an increasingly globalized and diverse society, it will be necessary to have the skills to lead others and to accept each other's "differences." Accepting various cultures and people’s way of communication will become vital when persuading others. Thus, it is highly recommended that we actively experience different cultures, broaden our perspective, and train ourselves to be flexible and responsive from a young age. Rather than judging on the basis of "can I do it or not?", I would like you to think "should I try it or not?" and challenge your own potential that you have not realized. I believe that by having a variety of diversity within yourself, you will expand your world, make more friends, gain new experiences, and enrich your life.
